Oigle invites the reader to look at Cake Sans from a different perspective by turning its structure on its head. Well, on its side, to be precise. Pieter added contrast to Cake Sans by making the horizontals heavier instead of adding weight to the verticals (the traditional method). This gave rise to a reverse-contrast typeface – “rise” being the operative word because it creates an illusion of three-dimensionality, as if the letters rise from the background. Not like Darth Vader, but rather like clever typographic constructions. The unusual contrast adds a soupçon of Wild West and Ringling Bros. to the typeface.
